# Lab Note: The Organ Doctrine

**Date:** 2026-08-12
**Status:** Current program foundation

The central organising idea right now is the Organ Doctrine.

## Three channels

Organs (computational capacities) are allowed to enter the mind through three documented routes:

- **Channel A — Endowed**
Translated from biological priors and installed at the beginning. Each one is subject to a retention gate: if ablating it after a measured window produces no measurable cost, it is demoted or removed.

- **Channel B — Tuned**
Parameters and topology adjusted by population search (evolution) running in the machine. This is the stand-in for the deep-time search that produced biological brains.

- **Channel C — Grown**
New structure created when the existing mind demonstrates demand that cannot be met by what it already has. This is the part we are deliberately trying to make real.

No organ is an installed answer. They are capacities. Facts and knowledge still have to be earned through experience or entered as testable testimony.

## Current census (high level)

As of the latest as-built snapshot:

- Four organs have passed independent preregistered trials and are kept on their own evidence.
- One additional organ is carried by credit from existing results.
- Several others have been measured and dropped (most notably working memory due to substrate impedance).
- A coordination sweep between certain kept organs is still owed.

All of this work is currently running on small synthetic boolean tasks. That scope is explicit and deliberate. We are not yet claiming generality beyond the families we have actually tested.

## Why this framing

The first phase of the program showed that a single viability drive plus richer worlds was not enough to cold-start the kind of structure we actually care about. The Organ Doctrine is the correction: give the mind a reasonable starting set of capacities (like a newborn), let evolution tune them, and build the machinery for it to grow new ones when it needs them.

The doctrine is still young. Most of the interesting work is still ahead. This note is just to name the current operating model clearly.
